Osteopathy is a system of health care that utilises skilful hands-on physical techniques to correct dysfunctions of the body that are causing and maintaining pain. These techniques may include specific deep tissue massage, manipulation, postural balancing and exercise. Because osteopathic treatment is based on a thorough investigation and subsequent diagnosis, it is often highly effective at getting to the cause of your pain and preventing it from coming back.
How can an osteopath help me?
An osteopath is a primary care practitioner with the necessary skill to assess your complaint. Your osteopath can assess structural changes that may lead to immobility and dysfunction, due to:
- recurring injuries
- poor posture and decreased flexibility
- muscular spasm
- secondary effects of hip, knee and foot problems
What conditions do osteopaths treat?
Osteopathy is a very effective treatment for many conditions, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Sporting injuries
- Muscular pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Sciatica
- Tennis elbow
- Whiplash
- Disc problems
- Frozen shoulder
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Occupational injuries
By designing an appropriate course of treatment, your osteopath will also provide an ongoing management program to prevent a recurrence of the problem.
What training does an osteopath have?
Osteopaths must complete a 5 year degree course and be registered by the Osteopathic Registration board in order to practise in Australia.
How long will the treatment take?
Initial consultation including case history, examination and treatment may take up to 1 hour. Returning patients may require 30 - 45 minutes depending on individual presentation.
Can I claim osteopathic treatment on my health insurance?
Rebates are available through most private health insurers. Osteopaths are TAC and Workcover approved.
