What is a Clinical Psychologist?
Psychologists are experts in human behaviour who work to treat people with mental health problems and help individuals find ways of functioning better. A Clinical Psychologist has specialist training in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. Clinical Psychologists typically have 6-8 years of tertiary training and use evidence based techniques to treat and/or manage psychiatric conditions.
Problems Treated by our Clinical Psychologists
Some Clinical Psychologists treat young children and people with other problems (not listed above) such as problem gambling, sexual dysfunction, ADHD, Autism, and Asperger’s Disorder. If you are seeking a Clinical Psychologist who treats a problem that is not listed above, please contact the Australian Psychological Society for assistance.
Treatment Styles
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Emotion Focussed Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are the predominant treatment modalities used by our Psychologists. These therapies have been shown in research to be effective in treating a range of mental health problems.
Professional Memberships
All of our Psychologists have completed Doctoral level training. They are registered with the Psychologists’ Registration Board of Victoria, the Australian Psychological Society, and are Medicare providers. Additionally, some of our Psychologists are registered with Workcover, TAC, and various Divisions of General Practice.
Referral Process
Clients referred by a GP or a Psychiatrist are eligible to receive Medicare rebates for up to 12 sessions per calendar year. The GP or Psychiatrist will need to complete a Mental Health Care Plan and then fax or post this to the practice.
Additionally, you may be interested in seeing one of our Clinical Psychologists through Workcover, Victims of Crime, or TAC. Please speak further with your GP or Psychologist about this.
